The Story of The Yellow Rose of Texas

Texas

According to legend
"The Yellow Rose of Texas" was
"high yellow" Emily Morgan West,
who was born a slave and captured
by general Santa Anna during the
Texas Revolution in 1836.
The General tried to win her charms
and failed, but Emily managed to
smuggle Santa Anna's battle plans
to Sam Houston who then defeated
Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto.
Perhaps Texas would still be part
of Mexico today, were it not for
the "High yeller Rose", who knows?

The Yellow Rose of Texas

There's a yellow rose in Texas
That I am going to see
No other darky knows her
No one only me
She cried so when I left her
It like to broke my heart
And if I ever more find her
We nevermore will part.

Chorus:
She's the sweetest rose of color
This darky ever knew
Her eyes are bright as diamonds
They sparkle like the dew
You may talk about dearest May
And sing of Rosa Lee
But the yellow rose of Texas
Beats the belles of Tennessee.

Where the Rio Grande is flowing
And the starry skies are bright
She walks along the river
In the quiet summer night
She thinks if I remember
When we parted long ago
I promised to come back again
And not to leave her so.

Chorus:
She's the sweetest rose of color
This darky ever knew
Her eyes are bright as diamonds
They sparkle like the dew
You may talk about dearest May
And sing of Rosa Lee
But the yellow rose of Texas
Beats the belles of Tennessee.

Oh now I am agoing to find her
For my heart is full of woe
And we will sing the song together
We sung so long ago
We will play the banjo gaily
And will sing the song of yore
And the yellow rose of Texas
Shall be mine forevermore.

Chorus:
She's the sweetest rose of color
This darky ever knew
Her eyes are bright as diamonds
They sparkle like the dew
You may talk about dearest May
And sing of Rosa Lee
But the yellow rose of Texas
Beats the belles of Tennessee.

Home on the Range

text: Dr. Brewster Higley
musik: Daniel E. Kelley

Oh, give me a home, where the buffalo roam,
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Home, home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Where the air is so pure, the zephyrs so free,
The breezes so balmy and light,
That I would not exchange my home on the range
For all the cities so bright.

Home, home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

The red man was pressed from this part of the West,
He's likely no more to return
To the banks of Red River where seldom if ever
Their flickering campfires burn.

Home, home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

How often at night when the heavens are bright
With the light of the glittering stars,
Have I stood here amazed and asked as I gazed
If their glory exceeds that of ours.

Home, home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Oh, I love these wild flowers in this dear land of ours;
The curlew I love to hear scream;
And I love the white rocks and the antelope flocks
That graze on the mountain-tops green.

Home, home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Oh, give me a land where the bright diamond sand
Flows leisurely down the stream;
Where the graceful white swan goes gliding along
Like a maid in a heavenly dream.

Home, home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Then I would not exchange my home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Home, home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Lilla Calle med ett svärd
Vaggvisa
text: Erik Johan Stagnelius

Lilla Calle, med ett svärd
Vid sin vänstra sida,
Hastar ut i riddarfärd,
Att mot trollen strida.
Vit är hans häst,
Guldprydd hans väst,
Fjädrarna svaja på hatten.

Minna för sin spegel står,
Som en stjärna blänker,
Flätar pärlor i sitt hår
Och på Calle tänker.
Skön är hans mö,
Vit som en snö,
Röd som en törnros i dalen.

Lilla Calle i galopp
Runt kring världen travar,
Över branta klippors topp,
Ängar, berg och gravar.
Präktig han far,
Borgar han tar,
Städer och byar han vinner.

Minna jämnt till dagens slut
Sitter i sin kammar,
Spänner silkesväven ut
Mellan bågens rammar,
Stickar därpå
Vita och blå,
Röda och guldgula rosor.

Lilla Carl i kungasaln
Dricker söta viner.
Pärlor bubbla i pokaln,
Klara som rubiner.
Tapper han är,
Stjärnor han bär.
Stjärnor och band uppå rocken.

I sin faders park ibland
Lilla Minna vankar,
Med en blomma i sin hand,
Carl i sina tankar.
Röd är dess kind,
Lätt som en hind
Minna i buskarna svävar.

Lilla Calle, vig och snar,
På sin häst sig kastar,
Över berg och backar far
Och till Minna hastar.
Flickorna se
På ritten och ge
Anskri vid travarens satser.

Lilla Calle, hög och stor,
In i salen stiger,
Minna står bredvid sin mor
Och för riddarn niger.
Eldig och kär,
Hon tänker så här:
Christ give, att riddarns jag vore!
